For people born with a cleft lip and/or palate, pronouncing certain sounds isn’t just a challenge it’s a daily barrier to communication.
What comes naturally to most is a constant struggle for them. That’s why Lipography was created: a typeface that transforms this difficulty into a visual symbol of empathy and awareness.
Lipography is designed to reflect the phonetic challenges of cleft speech. Each letter graphically represents real physical obstacles faced when speaking: fractures in the letterforms symbolize the difficulty in generating lip pressure; openings represent the air leakage caused by incomplete closure; and asymmetries or gaps reflect the cleft itself and the impossibility of full lip contact. In this way, Lipography is more than a font it’s a visible voice for those who often go unheard.
